CUTTACK: The government on Thursday deposited an account payee cheque for Rs. 3 lakhs in the High Court registry in the name of Kastu Behera, whose son Narayan was killed in police custody in December 2003. It may be recalled that the court gave directions last month that the amount be paid as additional compensation. Narayan’s family earlier received an interim compensation of Rs. 1 lakh from the government following an High Court order while another Rs. 50,000 was given to the family from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund immediately after the calamity. Narayan was found hanging inside a police lock-up under Bikrampur police outpost of Angul district on December 31, 2003. He was picked up in connection with a theft case but was illegally detained for over three days in the lock-up without forwarding him to court. The court held the government responsible for the incident. The government was, however, given the liberty to recover the entire amount from the police officers responsible for the illegal detention.
