NAMAKKAL: The sugarcane crushing operation in Salem Cooperative Sugar Mill in Mohanur commenced on Wednesday.
Collector G. Sundaramurthi inaugurated the operations at a function held on the mill premises. The mill had planned to crush 4.95 lakh tonnes of sugarcane this season. Sugarcane cultivated in 10,431 acres had been registered with the mill.
A press release said that the mill had crushed a total of 5.77 lakh tonnes of sugarcane during 2006-07 with an average sugar recovery of 9.98 per cent.
The mill had offered Rs. 1,106 as price per tonne of sugarcane and settled the amount to the farmers in single payment.
Besides, the mill had taken 52,000 tonnes of sugarcane from the registered farmers of Perambalur and Subramaniya Siva Sugar mills.
In 2005-06, the mill crushed 4.65 lakh tonnes of sugarcane with an average sugar recovery of 9.94 per cent.
The management had carried out maintenance works and taken efforts to ensure smooth functioning of the mill this season. The mill’s Special Officer M. Fernandez appealed to the farmers to cooperate with the management for the effective functioning of the mill.
The Collector also inaugurated water purification plant in the mill during the function.
