NEW DELHI: The long strides taken by Delhi in the field of energy conservation and pollution control through introduction and expansion of the Delhi Metro railway network, creation of the first eco-friendly CNG-run public transport system in the world and other measures such as promoting use of CFL bulbs were highlighted by Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra at a conference on “The Future in our Hands: Addressing the Leadership Challenge of the Climate Change” organised by the UN in New York recently. Addressing a press conference along with Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan here on Thursday, Ms. Mehra recalled how she had presented the case of the local authorities before the world forum and told the heads of state from more than 160 countries about the importance of the role of the local authorities in addressing the various challenges. She had spoken about how some of the local authorities of the world had addressed the problems of environment, transport, power, water, garbage management, sewer management and water drainage with scientific and far-sighted assessment and said other governments should learn from them. The conference began with Ms. Mehra’s speech pointing out how climate change was causing putting pressure on the limited resources. Ms. Mehra told the conference that Delhi was now preparing for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
