THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The new Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church Joseph Mar Thoma called on Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here on Thursday.

Official sources said the visit was a courtesy call. He was installed as the new Metropolitan of the Church early this month.

Government aid sought

During the visit, the Metropolitan sought the assistance of the government in the organisation of the annual Maramon Convention in Pathanamthitta district.

The Metropolitan said the Church and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were having good relations.

The party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan had called on the Metropolitan in Thiruvalla on Wednesday and sought the support of the Church for the government’s policies.

The discussions did not touch upon educational issues.

The Metropolitan, who reached here around 9.30 a. m., spent about ten minutes with the Chief Minister.
