BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday refused to interfere with the operations of the German multinational firm, Metro Cash and Carry. It, however, directed the Union Government to “closely monitor the activities of the firm so that it confirms to the provisions of the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999”. Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri passed the order on petitions by Radio House of Brigade Road and several other firms on Avenue Road, Millers Road, Commercial Street and Jayanagar, challenging the activities of Metro. The petitioners had contended that Metro was also into retail trade and this was in violation of the regulations. They said Metro, a wholly owned subsidiary of the German firm, METRO AG, was violating several guidelines and trade laws. They said Metro could only sell in wholesale but both its outlets in Bangalore — at Yeshwanthpur and on Kanakapura Road — were selling articles and goods in retail. They claimed that Metro had handed out more than 2 lakh membership cards to Bangaloreans. They alleged that the cards had not been limited to shopkeepers or traders.
