KOCHI: A high-powered committee set up by the Union Ministry of Shipping to review the security preparedness of major ports and shipyards in the country has emphasised the need for standardisation of systems and processes to meet world standards of operations and security protocols. The committee has also recommended setting up a body at the national level for standardisation, regulation and oversight of security preparedness for India’s maritime infrastructure. The committee submitted its report to the Union Shipping Minister T.R. Baalu in Delhi on Wednesday. It made a presentation before the Minister and Union Shipping Secretary A.K. Mohapatra. The committee, headed by Cochin Port Trust Chairman N. Ramachandran, said in its report that additional cost of standardised security should not be passed on to the trade, as it could make Indian imports and exports less competitive. The cost should be borne by the Union government. The committee strongly favoured standardisation of port security.
