MANGALORE: Muslims attending police station-level peace committee meetings convened ahead of Id-ul-Fitr struck a sweet note by offering packets of dry fruits to the members of the committee as well as the policemen at a police station here on Thursday. Superintendent of Police N. Sathish Kumar, who appreciated the gesture, said that it would go a long way in establishing peace in the region and fostering better understanding among people of various communities. Mr. Kumar told The Hindu that the department has organised such meetings in all police stations and the response has been overwhelming. Better relationsApart from fostering better relationships among the communities, the department has mobilised additional police forces to ensure peaceful conduct of the festival, he said. “We have received seven platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police for bandobast in the run-up to Id,” he said. “We are expecting an additional 300 home guards to supplement our district police force during this festival season,” he added. Vinay A. Gaonkar, Police Circle Inspector, Mangalore North, said the gesture of the members of Muslim Central Committee at the peace committee meeting organised at Mangalore North Police Station and the police station personnel was indeed a positive gesture. Similar peace committee meetings would be held in other police stations in the circle, he said.
