BANGALORE: The State will have 400 wireless loop (WLL) stations shortly which will increase the landline capacity from 1.8 lakh to 4 lakh. This will not just clear 95 per cent of names on the waiting list but will also help have additional lines. On the recent developments in the Telecom Karnataka Circle, Chief General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Karnataka Circle, T.S. Kuppuswamy told The Hindu that 220 new stations will be added to the existing 180 stations in the State with nearly 2-lakh line capacity. The expansion will be completed by November 15, he added. Mr. Kuppuswamy said the inclusion of Wi-max was being explored for viability as well as coverage in Bangalore and the number of applicants was also increasing steadily. The Bangalore Telecom Circle has intensified the development of Wi-fi facility and has identified 25 hotspots for usage of Wi-fi. As many as 11 more hotspots were being located in the city. At present, Wi-fi was accessible in airports, hotels, railway stations, convention centres, hospitals and in some apartments. Efforts were on to make it universal. The wireless access to broadband could be had from wireless enabled laptops. For further expansion of the stable media broadband, BSNL was planning to have multi-play stations project with a capacity of 33 lakh ports. He said there are at least 25,000 enquiries with BSNL in the State for broadband connection, Mr. Kuppuswamy added. BSNL was also planning to release a Fixed Lines Pre Paid (FLPP) Scheme for Public Call Office but this will work better in the WLL intelligent network. It was working towards adding intelligent network in all WLL areas. Stating that BSNL broadband scheme was being taken to rural areas in a big way, Mr. Kuppuswamy said the telephone company wanted to reserve 20,000 broadband connections exclusively for rural areas. As many as 2,500 exchanges in the State will enable the rural broadband programme, he added. This way, he said, the farmer and the rural people will be empowered to get their data faster. On the speed of the broadband, Mr. Kuppuswamy said the speed depended upon the server the user seeks information from. If the server agent did not upgrade his server, the speed would not be as per the standards expected by the user.
