This Day That Age
India’s finance minister Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari has urged continued understanding of his country’s foreign policies and urgent economic needs. Speaking at a reception given in his honour in New York by the Foreign Policy Association and the World Affairs Centre for the United States, Mr. Krishnamachari emphasised that India’s foreign policy was “not neutrality but a policy of non-alignment.” This policy was governed by India’s historical experience, by the country’s philosophical beliefs and by the most immediate needs of the people. He observed that if America was living proof of what can be achieved in freedom, India was the testing ground for the survival of democracy in large parts of the world which had been left behind in the race for economic progress.
