Letters to the Editor
H.D. Kumaraswamy’s resignation as Karnataka Chief Minister ends a political drama but does not undo its larger impact on the polity. All institutions are sustained by some values. One of them is honouring an agreement, whatever its nature. The main reason given by the JD (S) for not honouring its agreement with the BJP was that it was communalising the State. This does not hold water as the BJP is no more communal today than it was 20 months ago. C.J.M. Mathew, Bangalore It has become a practice for political parties to force elections on the people to prove a point. In fact, there have been instances when leaders have resigned and contested in the by-election from the same constituency to prove that they can win. I wish the Election Commission is given the power to disqualify for five years parties or leaders who resign before the end of their term on flimsy grounds. Alternatively, they, not the exchequer, should be asked to foot the bill for the elections. K.V.L.N. Sharma, Secunderabad
