Unfortunate

The resolution of the Madras High Court Advocates Association to continue its indefinite court boycott is unfortunate. The head constable who allegedly assaulted two advocates on October 1 cannot be arrested just because the lawyers say so. It can be done only after a proper investigation.

When the advocates themselves do not repose faith in the rule of law, how can we expect the people to do so? Has any advocates’ association ever protested injustices against ordinary citizens?

S. Prakash,

Mutharasanallur

Don’t lawyers advise their clients who are victims of assault to take recourse to the law? Don’t they know that one cannot be a judge in one’s own case and dictate a course of action?

If every professional body starts resorting to such boycott for any alleged wrongdoing, will not the entire legal system collapse depriving the advocates of their livelihood?

S.P. Asokan,

Cuddalore

It is extremely irresponsible on the part of lawyers to strike work, paralysing the functioning of courts for five days.

As it is, the people are not very happy with the way the justice system functions. The indefinite strike will only add to their woes. The lawyers should behave in a responsible way and give up the boycott.

N. Rajagopalan,

Chennai
