Corrections and clarifications

>>The caption of the accompanying AFP photograph in an AFP report “Botham formally made a knight” (“Sport”, October 11, 2007) was: “Arise, Sir Botham: Sir Ian Botham poses with his wife Kathy and grandsons Regan (left) and James after receiving his knighthood.” It should have been “Arise, Sir Ian ….” The title “Sir” is prefixed to the Christian name and not to the surname.

>>It is BEML Limited and not Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) as mentioned in a report “‘Self sufficiency achieved in rail coach manufacture’” (Karnataka, October 10, 2007, page 5). The company has made a change in its name. (The report was on the Minister of State for Railways R. Velu dedicating the rail coach unit-II of BEML Limited to the nation.)

>>A sentence in the ninth paragraph of an article “Beyond the western clichés” (The Hindu-Magazine, October 7, 2007, page 2, copyright Sueddeutsche Zeitung, distributed by the New York Times Syndicate) was: “In 1943 Stalin, Eisenhower and Churchill chose Tehran as a place to discuss the war.” It should have been Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill. (From November 28 to December 1, 1943, the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met with Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States, and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in Tehran. The three leaders discussed the details of their joint campaign against Hitler and reaffirmed their joint policy of accepting nothing less than an unconditional surrender from Germany. The main issue was “Operation Overlord”. “Operation Overlord” was the code-name given to the Allied invasion of France scheduled for June 1944. The overall commander of the operation was the American, General Dwight Eisenhower.)
