Sethu panel to invite suggestions, objections

NEW DELHI: The Committee of Eminent Persons on the Sethusamudram project will invite objections and suggestions from all concerned, including those who have filed writ petitions in the Supreme Court challenging it, besides giving a personal hearing to those filing objections.

The committee, constituted by the government, held its first meeting here on Thursday. It will consider all suggestions/proposals/documents after giving them a personal hearing.

The objections and suggestions must reach the member-secretary of the committee at the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Postgraduate and Research Development Block, “Poompozhil,” 5, Greenways Road, Chennai - 600 028 by 5 p.m., October 31. Objections can be filed in person or through registered post.

The committee will have personal hearings from October 29 to November 6 (including holidays). November 4-6 has been earmarked for giving a personal hearing to the petitioners. However, to participate in the hearing, all others (excluding petitioners) will have to submit proof of their having filed objections/suggestions in the form of an acknowledgement by the committee or postal receipts.

Panel members

S. Ramachandran, Chairman of the Monitoring Committee on the Environmental Impact Issues of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras, is the convener of the panel. R.K. Jain, IAS, Managing Director, Indian Ports Association, is member-secretary.

The other members are R.S. Sharma, former Professor of History, Delhi University; M. Sakthivel, president of the Aqua Culture Foundation of India; Dilip K. Biswas, former Chairman of the Central Pollution Control Board, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India; J.R.B. Alfred, former Director of the Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata; S.R. Wate, Deputy Director of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur; P. Jagadeesan, former Vice-Chancellor of the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu; Y. Vaikuntham, former Vice-Chancellor of the Kakatiya University, Andhra Pradesh; and K. Paddayya, Director of the Deccan College, Pune.
