Ramu Memorial basketball tournament

MUMBAI: Tamil Nadu XI, Indian Army in the men’s section and Railway teams in women’s section are the crowd-pullers at the 24th United Phosphorous Limited Ramu Memorial basketball tournament to be held from October 14 to 21 at the Indian Gymkhana courts.

Co-sponsored by Reliance Mutual Fund, the popular league-cum-knockout event will be played on Terraflex courts under floodlights.

Prize money

The men’s champion will receive Rs. 65,000 and the Ramu Memorial Trophy, the women’s winner Rs. 35,000 and the Dr. K. Muthukumar Memorial Trophy.

‘Player of tournament’ award and skills competitions for players will also be there.

India’s star basketballer Sambhaji Kadam (Indian Army) is among the many national and international players to take part.

The men’s competition will feature TN XI, Army, Central Excise & Customs (Kochi), Indian Navy, Vijaya Bank (Bangalore), South-Central Railway (Secunderabad), Western Railway and Maharashtra.

Southern Railway’s dominance in women’s competition will be challenged by Chhattisgarh, South Central Railway (Bilaspur), Kerala State Electricity Board, Central Railway and Western Railway, said the tournament director Hitin Kotian.

Indian Gymkhana, the tournament organiser, is looking at this year’s event as a preparation for the 25th silver jubilee edition of the Ramu Memorial next year.

All India Radio FM Gold will be broadcasting the semifinals and final live on Oct. 20 and 21 respectively. The all-India event, revived last year after a 14-year gap, is a prestigious tournament on the national basketball calendar and has attracted India’s best in the past. — Special Correspondent
