England clinches series scoreboard

Ted Corbett

COLOMBO: The fourth one-day international between Sri Lanka and England was always going to be a fight to the finish. Like Kumar Sangakkara for the home side, England also had a bonny fighter, its left-handed opening batsman Alastair Cook.

Cook, with his 80 and his century stand with Kevin Pietersen for the third wicket, ensured England’s victory by five wickets and a rare series success in the sub-continent; 3-1 up with one to play.

Add the one-day series success against India at the end of the summer and England can claim to be in the foothills of a climb to the summit.

Pursuing 212 for a win, the visitors began fluently, losing only Phil Mustard for 19 off 30 in the first six overs.

Fifty came in 14 overs, with a smooth cover drive from Cook, but when Ian Bell started to play with ease he tried to repeat a lofted drive off Kaushal Lokauarachichi and was caught in the deep.

But, once Pietersen settled down with Cook the game was over, even if Cook was out 20 short of a deserved hundred, Paul Collingwood first ball and Owais Shah when four were needed for victory.
