A novel exposure for Pudukottai’s college students, who thronged the book fair on day one
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Students browsing through the books at the exhibition in Pudukottai on Thursday. PUDUKOTTAI: Organising a book exhibition in towns such as Pudukottai is a rare event. And a venture towards this direction by a group of book dealers has come as a boon for book lovers and bibliophiles of the town. More particularly, college students seem to be the largest beneficiaries, if the number of youth thronging the book fair on the inaugural day on Thursday is any indication. The 11-day exhibition, organised by Meenatchi Book Shop from Madurai, Ananda Vikatan, Kizhakku Padhippagam, Sri Ramakrishna Mutt and ‘Sura Books’ — all from Chennai, at the Sri Meenatchi Marriage Hall here has been attracting a large number of college students, who aspire for reference material and advanced versions of their syllabi. “We hail from distant villages, about 20 km from here. We have not been exposed to any book fair so far,” say N. Venkatesh, E. Prabakaran and M. Ilangao, all undergraduates from H.H. The Rajah’s College. They placed orders with organiser R. Arunachalam. Mr. Arunachalam said he did not expect such an overwhelming response from the student community. About one lakh books on 5,000 topics ranging from medicine to astrology, architecture to epics and meditation to cookery have been displayed. “With the exhibition coinciding with the Navarathiri festival, we have brought books on ‘slokas’ and songs on Sri Mahishasura Mardhini, Sri Lakshmi, Sri Saraswathy and so on,” says G. Venkatakrishnan from Sri Ramakrishna Mutt. The exhibits on compact discs are bound to attract people from various walks of life. Compact discs on academic lessons catering to the needs of children and students are also available. A special discount of 10 per cent will be offered during the exhibition, which is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. till October 21.
