ARANTHANGI: The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board has mooted a proposal to construct apartments for sanitary workers of the Aranthangi Municipality as part of the State Government’s exercise to improve their dwelling environment.
The municipality will approach the district administration for allotment of a site for the construction of the apartments, Municipal Chairman P. Mariappan said.
Presiding over a municipal council meeting here on Thursday, Mr. Mariappan said that since municipal land was not available for the project, the local body sought the district administration’s assistance for allotment of site. The Board had sanctioned Rs.15 lakh for providing basic amenities in slums in the town.
A sum of Rs.60 lakh had been sanctioned for re-laying roads in all wards. It would implement the solid waste management programme for which the State Government had sanctioned Rs.22.5 lakh.
A number of councillors said steps should be taken to post additional doctors at the Government Hospital in Aranthangi. They said pregnant women were the worst-hit.
The Chairman assured them he would seek the intervention of the authorities.
