100 acres to be developed immediately Three model layouts prepared for the park TIRUNELVELI: Some of the companies, which will find a place in the Information Technology (IT) park to be developed at Gangaikondan near here, are expected to commence their operation from August 2008, according to the Managing Director, Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT), C. Umashankar. Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the ‘SMExpressions 2007,’ a conference organised by Confederation of Indian Industry here on Thursday, he said that though the ELCOT had decided to take 500 acres in the first phase for the proposed IT park, 100 acres would be developed immediately and sold to the companies at the rate of Rs.15 lakh an acre. Internationally acclaimed architects had prepared three model layouts for the park and the final layout would be selected soon. While 10 acres had been allotted to Sutherland Global Services Limited, Hexaware Technologies had sought 25 acresto establish its office premises. After allocating 100 acres to the companies in the first phase, the remaining 400 acres would be developed jointly by ELCOT (26 per cent) and a leading private promoter (74 per cent), having assets to the tune of over Rs.500 crore, in phase II. “Precisely, the Gangaikondan IT Park will be fully operational with anchor and smaller companies in the next three years to provide direct employment to nearly 1 lakh youths,” he said. Kayathar airstripAsked whether the Government would consider the possibility of reviving the airstrip at Kayathar, Mr. Uma Shankar said though the first priority was infrastructure such as night landing facility, length of the runway etc. at Tuticorin airport, it would also explore the possibility of keeping the Kayathar airfield ready.
