CHENNAI: Women members of self help groups in Usilampatti block, Madurai, have helped wipe out female infanticide in the area, said Andal Damodaran, vice-president, Indian Council for Child Welfare, (ICCW)-Tamil Nadu.

Speaking at the 103rd birth anniversary function of Rani Lady Meyyammai Achi of Chettinad, organised by Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust here on Thursday, she said: “The adolescents we trained 20 years ago are now young mothers. They have taken an oath to respect the girl child.”

The Trust has chosen the ICCW for the Rani Lady Meyyammai Achi Birthday Commemoration Award for 2007 for its work to uplift women and children. The award comprised a silver salver, a citation and Rs. 1 lakh. Madras High Court judge K. Suguna presented the award. Co-optex managing director M.P. Nirmala, Trust patron M.A.M. Ramaswamy and president M.A.M.R. Muthiah spoke.
