Kochi: The Kerala State Rice Mill Owners’ Association has demanded that the Centre relax norms on export of rice, so that ‘kutthari’ (boiled rice) can be exported to countries where Malayalis reside. Addressing media persons, P.S. Abdul Nazar, president of the organisation said that as of now, only ‘basmati’ rice can be exported. This has become a bane to Malayalis residing abroad as they cannot get their favourite rice. The restriction has also affected the functioning of around 200 rice mills which export boiled rice from Kerala. Kerala used to export 200 containers of boiled rice every month, costing Rs.10 to Rs.15 crore, said association secretary Varkey Peter. He said that instances of mill owners and others adulterating inferior quality rice with red oxide, brick powder etc., have to be brought to light.
