Coast Guard steps up vigil along Palk Bay

Staff Reporter

CLOSE WATCH: A hovercraft of the Coast Guard near a private barge, which was detained at Rameswaram, on Thursday.

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Coast Guard has stepped up vigil along the Palk Bay and Palk Straits and is closely monitoring the movement of barges and ships sailing through uncertified routes.

The move assumes significance in the wake of reports of barges crossing the Adam’s Bridge area, where dredging as part of the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project work has been suspended following a Supreme Court order. The Coast Guard on Wednesday intercepted a private barge, which was on its way to Krishanapattinam from Goa, along with 14 crew members, for taking the Adam’s Bridge route. It has been anchored at Rameswaram and the port authorities are conducting enquiries.

According to the port authorities, small vessels and barges, which want to go to the east coast from the west coast, have to sail through the Pamban Pass after paying a fee. It is the only route certified by the Tamil Nadu Mercantile Marine Department. Otherwise, they have to take a circuitous route along Sri Lanka.

However, captains of some barges, who are familiar with the Palk Straits area and the Gulf of Mannar area, have started sailing from the west coast to the east coast by crossing the Adam’s Bridge area in the wake of the depth created by dredging for the Sethusamudram project.

Sensitive area

“Adam’s Bridge area is a sensitive area as far as security is concerned. No vessel will be allowed to sail without valid documents. Moreover, Adam’s Bridge area does not have depth for vessels to sail. If they cross this route, there is a possibility of ships running aground.

It may affect the environment through oil leakage. “Hence, patrolling vessels of the Coast Guard have been asked to closely monitor the movement of unauthorised vessels off the Rameswaram coast,” Commandant K. Janardhanan, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Station, Mandapam, told The Hindu on Thursday.
