“Congress always stands by minority communities”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Congress party always stands by the minority communities and safeguards their interests and rights, said Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy here on Thursday.

Participating in an Iftar party organised by Friends of Congress, Mr. Krishnasswamy said it was unfortunate that for crimes committed by some individuals, the religion was blamed. As long as the Congress party was in existence it would strive to maintain communal harmony.

At an another Iftar sponsored by the women’s wing of the Indian Muslim League, Kanimozhi MP wanted women to fight for their rights.

The Sachar Committee “exposed” how Muslim women remained backward even after 60 years of Independence. As long as they remained mute, people would take advantage of it. She appealed to women to treat their girl child on a par with their male child so that the idea of inferiority complex did not creep into the girl child’s mind.

She also distributed saris, sewing machines, and educational assistance to poor women.
