CHENNAI: A high-level meeting chaired by Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami on Thursday decided to drop the Cheyyur ultra mega power project in Kancheepuram district. [Projects of 4,000 megawatt are called ultra mega power projects].
As the land cost per acre was stated to be in the range of Rs. 35 lakh to Rs. 40 lakh, it was decided to abandon the project, according to an official release.
At the time of inaugurating work of the Vallur 1,000-MW thermal power station last month, the Electricity Minister had announced that Cheyyur was chosen as the site for an ultra mega power project. He had sought the Centre’s approval for one more project and suggested that Marakkanam be selected for the other ultra mega power project.
An official said that after the latest decision, Cuddalore and Marakkanam would be the sites for the ultra mega power projects. Among those present were M.P. Saminathan, Minister for Highways and Ports, L.K. Tripathy, Chief Secretary, R. Satapathy, Principal Secretary (Energy), K. Allaudin, Highways Secretary, K. Gnanadesikan, Finance Secretary, and Hans Raj Verma, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.
