Plan to procure 16.5 lakh tonnes of paddy

Special Correspondent

THANJAVUR: It is planned to procure 16.5 lakh tonnes of samba paddy this year, according to Food Minister E.V. Velu.

He told reporters here that out of 16.5 lakh tonnes, it was estimated that 13.5 lakh tonnes could be procured from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. This year, farmers would get Rs. 75 more per quintal of paddy. The price would be Rs. 725 a quintal for fine variety and Rs. 695 for common variety.

Samba procurement is expected to start from December this year and will reach the peak in January. It is planned to open 1,450 Direct Purchase Centres for procuring samba paddy. Last year 1,200 DPCs functioned.

Taking into consideration heavy arrivals of paddy at some centres last year, which forced officials to extend operations till late in the night, it has been decided to open two centres at places where the procurement was 2,000 tonnes a day.

The amount given for purchasing paddy at a DPC will be increased to Rs. 6 lakh from Rs 3 lakh. This will help in procuring more paddy. Sixty cap storages will be opened in the delta to store paddy besides moving 10,000 tonnes of paddy through rail and 15,000 tonnes by lorries a day.

Weighing machines

To help farmers find out the exact weight of paddy sold, electronic weighing machines will function at the DPCs. A total of 1,100 electronic weighing machines have been procured by the Government.

The minister said that there were adequate number of gunnies. The staff had been instructed not to take or demand bribe from farmers. Stern action would be taken against erring staff and employees.

Mr. Velu described the food situation in the State as “comfortable” and said seven lakh tonnes of rice was available as on date. Six monitoring committees had been formed to detect malpractice at the centres. Control rooms would function in each district headquarters and also at the food minister office at Chennai. People could lodge complaints there.

Union Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palani Manickam, State Commercial Taxes Minister S.N.M. Ubayathullah and State Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan were among those who attended the meeting.
