Man held for assisting LTTE

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The ‘Q’ branch police arrested Jayaraj Rathinam alias Vanniarasu (36) of Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district on Wednesday for alleged the offences relating to assisting banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and visiting Sri Lanka by obtaining a passport after furnishing false information.

Later he was ordered to be released on bail.

The police said in February this year Gokulan, a Sri Lankan Tamil, had sent by ship from Oslo spare parts such as boat propeller and steering wheel. When the consignment was checked by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence last month, it was found there was customs duty evasion.

Though Vanniarasu said the parts were meant for fishermen affected by tsunami, it was found that they could be used only in high speed boats and not by fishermen. The Central agency informed the ‘Q’ branch.

Investigation revealed that the arrested person was sentenced to life imprisonment in a 1997 murder case in his native place and was now on bail. While in Madurai prison, he came into contact with Karuppiah, an LTTE cadre, who was at present said to be staying abroad and procuring material for the Tigers.

The consignment had been sent through Gokulan and it was meant for the Tigers, the police said.

Vanniarasu still maintained contacts with Karuppiah. He suppressed the fact about his conviction and obtained a passport by furnishing a Chennai address.
