CHENNAI: With the appointment of 2,297 doctors since May 2006, all vacancies in government hospitals, PHCs and health sub centres have been filled, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Thursday. Presiding over the 17th convocation function of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Mr. Karunanidhi said this included 203 doctors with postgraduate qualification. He said for years, hospitals in the Nilgiris, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai and Perambalur districts were functioning with 30-50 per cent staff strength. That too had been addressed. Time-scaleA total of 1,405 doctors, who were on consolidated pay, have been moved to time-scale pay, Mr. Karunanidhi said. Similarly, 2,540 nurses and over 600 paramedics and professionals in medicine-related fields had been moved to time scale. So far 9,000 of the 13,000 vacancies in fields such as nursing, paramedical and hospital work, have been filled and action is being taken to fill the rest of the posts, he said. He said work had started on construction of medical colleges in Villupuram, Tiruvarur and Dharmapuri and funds had been allotted to refurbish Stanley Medical college. Attention was also being paid to Indian Systems of Medicine, Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, and Homoeopathy, with the appointment of 150 ISM practitioners in government sector hospitals, Mr. Karunanidhi said. Earlier, presenting the annual report, Vice-Chancellor Meer Mustafa Hussain said the university proposed to start a separate department of Siddha medicine for research on the medicinal value of herbs. To manage and overcome acute shortage of faculty in the fields of basic medical sciences, it proposed to start PG courses in Microbiology, Pathology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Bio Chemistry (M.D. courses) and Anatomy (M.S. course). Dr. Hussain said the Russian Embassy had entrusted the the university with the job of selecting candidates for 12 English medium medical colleges in Russia. All students aspiring to go to Russia for medical studies would be selected by it. Earlier, he read out the citations for the three medical professionals, S. K. Rajan, V. Chockalingam and B. Suresh, who received the Doctor of Science (h onoris causa) degree from Governor and Chancellor Surjit Singh Barnala. They were recognised for their contributions to the medical field. Dr. Chockalingam was recognised for his work in the practice and teaching of cardiology, Dr. Suresh for contributions to research and teaching in pharmacology and Dr. Rajan for his contributions in the field of medicine and medical education. Medals givenThe Governor also distributed medals and certificates to successful candidates. Students received their Ph.D., D.M. and M. Ch., MBBS, B.Pharm, B.Sc.(Nursing), B.P.T., B.O.T., BSMS, BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, BNYS and PG Diploma certificates. A total of 9,739 students were conferred their degrees. Fiftyfive gold medals, 17 silver medals and 38 cash awards were also given away on the occasion.
