NEW DELHI: Not many Indians probably are aware that a Muslim woman wrote an autobiographical account of the events of 1857 in Urdu. Or that the incidents centred round Delhi and Meerut had repercussions in distant Travancore. Or that the uprising touched a chord among the adivasis of Orissa. This and many such hitherto unknown facts of the First War of Independence in 1857 will be discussed at a seminar to be organised by Jamia Millia Islamia here.
Titled “Remembering 1857”, the seminar will be an international event that will bring together disparate and less-heard voices. The event, slated for November 5 and 6, will be attended by scholars, researchers and writers from the US, Scotland, Pakistan, Bangladesh and different parts of India.
