CONSULTATIONS: Minister of State for Railways R. Velu (right) inspecting the site for staff quarters of the Salem railway division in Salem on Thursday. SALEM: The Salem railway division will be fully operational from November 1 and will have jurisdiction over 862 km of track. Disclosing this here on Thursday, Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said as the division had been computerised, staff requirement would not be huge. The administration would require 341 employees. Transfer orders had been issued and they had to join duty by November 1. Another batch of 8,000 employees, including gang men, signal operators and station managers, who had been working in stations and areas brought under the jurisdiction of the new division recently, would be automatically brought under its control. Since February this year, the new division was issuing emergency quota for nine trains. The system would be introduced in all trains that would be operated by the division. Project cost revisedMr. Velu said the project cost had been revised from Rs.20 crore to Rs.22 crore. The Railway Ministry had sought 70 acres from the State Government for setting up the new railway township. Asked whether the Ministry would consider the demand for retaining the Pollachi-Kinathukadavu sector in the Madurai Division instead of merging it with Palakkad, the Minister said that as the Madurai Division had a jurisdiction over 1,460 km, there was no need for such a demand. By giving away 79 km, no State would suffer. Loss or gain, it was the Railways that would bear it. He asked the people to understand the stiff opposition while forming the new division. The Ministry had 48 such demands from 16 zones in various States. “Still we were able to make our six-decade dream of forming the Salem division a reality. It should be a give-and- take policy.” Inaugural functionMr. Velu said the inaugural function would be held on November 1. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would participate. Accompanied by Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) Ramanathan, Special Officer on Duty Bhola Singh, ADRM (Palakkad) U.F. Kujur and Deputy Commercial Manager, Salem Division, Muthusamy, the Minister inspected the new divisional office, the venue for the inaugural function and the site where the township would come up.
