Budweiser beats Novotel to claim title

HYDERABAD: Budweiser fought back in the final chukker to get the better of Novotel 6-4 1/2 in the final of the Canara Bank Prince of Berar Trophy of the Hyderabad Polo Season at the Bison Polo grounds here on Thursday.

With two Australians, Kelvin Johnson and Brendon Fahey in the fray, it looked as if Novotel, which started with an advantage of half-a-goal would emerge a comfortable winner.

The players combined well to control the ball during the first two chukkers.

Kelvin struck twice in the first chukker to put Novotel ahead very early in the game. Soon Atul Gupta was on target — a splendid culmination of a long ride from the centre and an admirable show of felicity and grace before slamming the ball in.

Dhruvpal Godara opened the account for Budweiser with a fine effort in the second chukker which obviously lifted the morale of his teammates.

But, Atul scored the fourth goal to give a convincing 4.5-1 lead to Novotel at the end of second chukker.

However, Budweiser fought back brilliantly thanks to Dhruvpal, who struck twice in the third chukker to reduce the lead.

In the fourth chukker, it was Budweiser’s show all the way as Dhruvpal scored twice more and Samir Suhag once to turn the tables on their opponents.
