Showcasing oratory skills: Students of government schools participating in an elocution competition in Puducherry on Friday. PUDUCHERRY: Which is the vehicle of Lord Indra? What is Puducherry’s State animal? What is the State tree of Tamil Nadu? Which marine animal is a fish but answers to the name of a mammal? Which is the largest tree in the world? Who coined the word “quiz”? Which is the cat species that is similar to the lion in appearance? If you know the answers to these questions and to other similar ones, interested in flora and fauna, and in college, then you can participate in the Department of Forest and Wildlife’s ‘Annual Wildlife Quiz’. The quiz for college students will be conducted on October 19 at the Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering and Technology in Kirumampakkam. To registerAll colleges in Puducherry have been intimated about the quiz. Colleges interested in participating in the ‘Annual Wildlife Quiz’ may contact the office of the Conservator of Forests on Cuddalore Road near the railway gate to submit entries. The quiz will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on October 19. An elimination round held that day will decide the teams that go to the finals. Winners stand to get a computer. P. Devaraj, Conservator of Forests, said the quiz for college students was being conducted from 2003. “We have conducted elocution, essay writing and painting competitions for schoolchildren – for government and private schools separately. The names of the winners will be announced soon and they will be taken on a tour. The prizes will be distributed on World Forest Day on March 21,” he added. On Friday, the Department of Forests and the nodal office of the National Green Corps, the State Training Centre, jointly conducted competitions for students of government schools. A total of 150 students took part in the drawing competition, 100 in essay and 30 in the elocution competition. In the elocution competition in which students had to talk for five minutes on bio-resource trade and sustainable use of bio-resources, participants spoke on trade of animal skins and bones, the sandalwood trade, medicinal trade and bio piracy. Wildlife in coloursThe painting competition saw children portraying wildlife in their natural surroundings, a green Puducherry, and endangered wildlife. For the topic ‘green Puducherry’, students of Standards VIII, IX and X were asked to paint any part of Puducherry and give it a green cover. The entries included paintings of Bharathi Park portrayed as a paddy field, a treed Goubert Avenue, the Mullodai entrance arch on Cuddalore road, Indira Gandhi Square and Ousteri Lake.
