Japan Festival begins today

It is jointly organised by the Japan Cultural and Information Centre and the Consulate-General of Japan.


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: This weekend, city residents will have an opportunity to experience Japanese culture and cuisine.

The VJT Hall is being decked up as the venue for the Japan Festival 2007 jointly organised by the Japan Cultural and Information Centre in association with the Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai, Alumni Society of AOTS (Association of Overseas Technical Scholarship), Thiruvananthapuram, and the Global Regionalist Initiative Projects (GRIP), Kerala.

Society president S.Ratnakumaran and chairman of the Japan Cultural and Information Centre K.Ashok Kumar told a press conference here on Friday that the two-day event was being hosted as part of the activities planned under the Indo-Japan Friendship Year 2007.

Some of the major programmes included in the festival include demonstration of Origami, Ikebana and Japanese tea ceremony, a flute-veena fusion music concert, Bon dance, Japanese doll and Bonsai exhibition and a display of photographs and paintings. Other events like Japanese game zone for children, video and animation show and Ikebana competition will also be held. A Japanese food festival is another highlight of the festival.

Cooperation Minister G.Sudhakaran is scheduled to inaugurate the festival on Saturday morning at a function attended by Consul-General of Japan Kazoo Minagawa. Chairman of GRIP Kerala, Japan, Koichi Shimaoka and secretary Toshihiro Imamura are also expected to participate.

Established in 2004 in Thiruvananthapuram, the Japan Cultural and Information Centre seeks to promote technical and cross-cultural cooperation between the two countries and foster friendly relations between the people.
