YERCAUD: The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Committee on Public Undertakings has urged the district administration to speed up the execution of works taken up to clean and beautify the Yercaud Lake.

Inspecting the tourism development works in Yercaud on Friday, committee members led by Chairman G.K. Mani pointed out that a sum of Rs. 1 crore had been allotted for improving the lake, a major tourist attraction in the hill resort.

Though the cleaning works began a year ago, they were yet to be completed.

Mr. Mani, while briefing media persons, said that the committee would recommend that the Government initiate immediate steps to prevent the flow of sewage into the lake.

The committee would also suggest that the Government increase the height of the lake bund by three feet, he further added.

The committee members pulled up the Tamil Nadu Housing Board officials for not taking serious efforts to sell the 67 houses constructed near Pagoda Point.

The houses had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 crore about seven years ago. Not a single a house had been sold so far, members pointed out. The committee also expressed disappointment over the lack of tourist amenities. The district administration should take up concerted efforts to create adequate facilities for tourists.

Mr. Mani also said that the committee would recommend that the Government establish an alternative route to Yercaud from Kannankurichi.

It would suggest that the government allot sufficient funds for laying the road.

Later, the committee inspected Stanley Reservoir, power generation plants and a few private units in Mettur. District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam and senior officials accompanied the committee members.
