Compounders perform surgery

Staff Reporter

“I mistook the compounders for doctors”

TIRUPATTUR: An inquiry has been ordered into an incident in which two compounders at Tirupattur Government Hospital allegedly operated on a patient to remove “extra growth of skin” in the urinary tract, leading to excessive bleeding.

According to informed sources, Suresh (23) of Theemampettai near Vaniyambadi, came to the hospital with his mother on Wednesday. A doctor in the outpatient ward said that the extra growth could be treated through medicines.

Even as Mr. Suresh tried to leave, compounders Ramalingam and Ramesh Babu approached him and convinced him that his problem needed surgery. “I mistook them for doctors,” Mr. Suresh said.

The compounders performed the operation on Thursday and told him to leave after 10 minutes.

Mr. Suresh said he started to bleed profusely while going to the bus stand by autorickshaw.

He and his mother rushed back to the hospital where the two compounders told them that the problem could be set right with a few stitches. Mr. Suresh boarded a bus to Vaniyambadi after two hours. He experienced pain and started to bleed again while getting down from the bus. A doctor at Vaniyambadi, Mr. Sursh claimed, refused to treat him and so he had to return to the Tirupattur hospital. This time two doctors attended to him and stopped further blood loss.

Mr. Suresh’s brother Santosh, who accompanied him from Vaniyambadi, lodged a complaint with Tirupattur Sub-Division Sub Collector Asish Kumar.
