Lack of water halts surgeries

Staff Correspondent

‘Hospital at Kodaganur must get water’

New programme ‘Zilla panchayat in villages’ introduced

Officials will visit villages for grievance redressal

DAVANGERE: Surgeries are not being conducted at the general hospital in Kodaganur owing to shortage of water, and patients requiring hospitalisation for treatment of serious illnesses have been advised to go to Davangere.

At the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) review meeting here on Friday, Ramappa, president of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat, directed the executive engineer of Davangere division, Niranjan, to make special arrangements to supply water to the hospital from a nearby tank.

He suggested that a pipeline be laid from the tank to the hospital to ensure permanent supply of water.

‘Important hospital’

Mr. Ramappa said the general hospital at Kodaganur was an important hospital catering for more than 25,000 people from various villages. He said he had been told that doctors at the hospital were reluctant to perform surgeries owing to the water shortage. Such complaints should be acted upon immediately, he said.

Stringent action

Chairing his first meeting as president of the zilla panchayat, Mr. Ramappa warned officials that stringent action would be taken if they were not diligent in discharging their duties.

He also pulled up an official from the Department of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare for allegedly sitting on files.

He asked the official to furnish details of the number of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries applying for various schemes along with details of those granted benefits under various schemes.

He also cited reports of harassment of people applying for caste and income certificates and warned officials of serious action.

Files and documents

Mr. Ramappa instructed officials to bring to the meetings all files and official documents required to answer questions posed on issues of development.

Mr. Ramappa said he had chalked out a new programme, “Zilla panchayat in villages”, under which all heads of departments would have to visit each village and solve the problems of the people.

Save expenses

The new programme would help people save on expenses incurred on visits to the zilla panchayat office.

Chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat Nijalingappa and its vice-president Manjappa were present.
