HASSAN: President of Asare Chandrasekhar has asked voluntary organisations as well as women’s self-help groups to educate people in villages on food security programmes. Speaking on the occasion of the weeklong celebrations of “World Food Day Saptaha” (Viswa Ahara Dinacharane Saptaha) at the Kannada Sahitya Parishat Bhavan here on Friday, he said despite India being self-sufficient in food production and food storage, the poor were still deprived of basic food requirements. Mr. Chandrasekhar said there were several discrepancies in the issue of ration cards to families living below the poverty line and added that the unit system was not being adhered to strictly. The allotment of foodgrains per unit was being reduced every year. People in the villages were still not aware of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme wherein one member of every household gets employment for 100 days in a financial year. There were 11 food security schemes in the country about which the people seemed unaware.
