Hassan
History: Trees at the PWD inspection bungalow being felled to make way for a new building in Hassan on Friday. HASSAN: The practice of preserving old buildings does not seem to have found favour with the Hassan district administration. Trees have been felled indiscriminately to enable new buildings to come up. Many old buildings in the city have been demolished over the past three years despite protests by people, including environmentalists. The Chennapatna tank was breached two years ago to make way for the new Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus stand, which is still to be completed. The breaching of the tank led to a fall in the water-table in the area. Buildings have also been demolished to widen the Mangalore-Bangalore road near N.R. Circle and Mahaveer Circle. However, work is yet to start. Now, a portion of the Inspection Bungalow has been demolished. With the State now under President’s Rule, it is likely that the new building will take a long time to be built.
