Snap power shutdowns irk public, units

Industries lose money as production is affected in Karur dustrict

KARUR: Erratic power supply over the past three days in Karur district has irked residents and entrepreneurs who have urged the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to avoid unannounced power shutdowns.

Over the past three days, the town and surrounding areas have been experiencing frequent shutdowns, throwing industrial and public activities out of gear. The worst hit are the numerous industrial units that dot the map of Karur.

Wastage of labour

“While we are adequately prepared to meet emergent situations with power generators, the TNEB has been springing a surprise on us for the past three days with frequent power shutdowns which is disturbing. Our workshops are largely affected and labour cannot be used productively,” observes a bus body-builder.

``For mosquito net manufacturing units, frequent shutdowns mean increased loss because the filament on the pipeline of the extruder at the time of power disruption will be rendered useless. An entrepreneur loses around Rs. 5,000 a day because of power shutdowns,” says HDPE Monofilament Yarn Manufacturers’ Association president and former MLA A. R. Malayappasamy.

Dyeing units

Dyeing and bleaching units, which have alternative sources of power supply, are also hit. They point out that their stiff production schedules have been thrown into disarray.

Housewives and working women are upset by morning power cuts. “We are neither in a position to cook quickly nor able to properly prepare the children for school. Elders are also put to great difficulty,” says S. Rekha, a teacher from South Gandhigram.

Mr. Malayappasamy complained that there was no proper response from local TNEB officials to the problem.

“In fact, we don’t bother about power supply all through the day or night. Let them say that there won’t be power for a fixed period,” he adds.
