BERHAMPUR: For the second time, the Mahalaya pilgrimage proved to be jinxed for pilgrims of Ganjam district. While 43 persons from the district were killed in the bus accident near Bishnuprayag on Thursday, 29 persons perished in a similar accident that occurred near Rudraprayag on September 18, 1990. A group of pilgrims was on a visit to Hardwar, Rishikesh and Badrinath. A bus was hired to travel uphill. The vehicle fell into a 50-metre ditch. Some 22 persons of the dead were from Shergarh area and the rest from other parts of the district, recalled a survivor of the accident S.K. Panda of Shergarh. People of Shergarh still mourn the dead when they offer Mahalaya ‘sharadh’ annually.
