CUTTACK: The ad hoc Additional Sessions Court of Chittaranjan Das on Friday rejected the bail applications of all the three persons who were arrested earlier this week by the police while illegally transporting huge quantities of beef from Cuttack to Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. The court refused to grant bail to the accused persons on the grounds that they had not obtained the requisite clearance from competent authorities to trade in cattle flesh. The Jagtpur police arrested Y. Appa Rao, a driver from Kakinada, and traders – Sk Tahir Ahmed and Sk Karamat Ali – of Cuttack on October 8 on charges of killing and maiming cattle and promoting enmity between different religious groups. Some 10 tones of beef was illegally being transported in a truck. Opposing the bail applications, district public prosecutor H.K. Jena argued that the accused persons had not obtained the requisite certificates from competent authorities to kill cattle. “Only bulls above the age of 14 that are unfit for breeding and bullocks of the same age that are unfit for agricultural purposes are killed for consumption provided a veterinary surgeon certifies that the animals are not sick,” Mr. Jena told the court referring to the provisions of the Orissa Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act of 1960. Mr. Jena also objected the bail in view of the tension prevailing between two religious groups in the locality, which are now in a festive mood.
