Bihar Govt. orders probe into MBBS admission scam

Four ineligible candidates were admitted to an MBBS course back in 1999

Two of them got admission despite failing to figure in the merit list

Patna: The Bihar Government on Friday ordered a probe in to alleged irregularities by Health Department in allotting admission to four ineligible candidates for an MBBS course, back in 1999.

“We will try to ascertain facts about it and have ordered the department officials to conduct a probe as prima facie, it seems to be a case of irregularities,” State Health Minister Chandra Mohan Rai said here.

According to a letter purported written by Vijay Shanker Dubey, former chairman of the Bihar Joint Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BJECEB) on February 10, 1999 to then Health Secretary A.K. Choudhary, the Health Department nominated four ineligible candidates for admission in MBBS course for 1998-99 at its Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Jamshedpur.

The letter highlighted that the nominations for admission were not made in consultation with the BJECEC and it violated the norms laid down.

“The documents available with the BJECEC shows that one Sangita Kumari, who was selected, had successfully passed the MBBS competitive test held in 1998 but her name figured at the bottom of the merit list and should not have been given admission,” the letter said.

Mr. Dubey further pointed out that two other candidates -- Saket Singh and Jyoti Verma -- got admission despite failing to figure in the merit list. He also objected to the Health Department nominating one Sandhya Mishra as her address showed that she did not fulfil the residential eligibility.

When contacted, Mr. Choudhary, now Chief Secretary, refused to offer any comment on it. “I will make any comment only after verifying the facts about these nominations.” -- PTI
