THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Transport Employees Association on Friday called off its strike planned for October 16 following the government decision to order a Crime Branch investigation into the death of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver Vijayambaraj. The decision to order a Crime Branch probe was taken at a conference of officials and trade union leaders convened by Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Orders were subsequently issued entrusting the probe to Deputy Inspector-General of Police of Crime Branch here. Mr. Vijayambaraj, attached to the Poovar depot of the KSRTC, sustained burns when someone set fire to the bus in which he was sleeping. He died on way to Government Medical College Hospital here. The Home Minister assured the union that measures would be taken to prevent attacks on transport workers. The assistance announced for the family of the driver would be increased, association general secretary T.K. Rajan said. The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas, Director General of Police Raman Srivastava, KSRTC chairman T.P. Senkumar, association president Vaikom Viswan and association working president K.K. Divakaran.
