Irrigation systems to be modernised at five villages in Tuticorin district

R. Vimal Kumar

Department of Agricultural Engineering to finance project

To be implemented in lands near command areas of irrigation tanks

It is aimed at augmenting irrigated agricultural productivity

Tuticorin: The Department of Agricultural Engineering will extend financial assistance to modernise irrigation systems in five villages in the district during this fiscal using the corpus allocated under Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water-bodies Restoration and Management (IAMWARM) project.

The scheme will be implemented in the land holdings of farmers situated near the command areas of irrigation tanks situated at Melakaranthai, Perayakudi, Mavilpatti, Ayyankarisalkulam and Aathankarai villages, all coming under Senkottiar river basin.

“Our aim is to augment the irrigated agricultural productivity within a sustainable water resource management framework and thereby increase the farm incomes”, I. D’Cruz Mohanasundar, Executive Engineer, Department of Agricultural Engineering, told The Hindu.

As part of the project, farm ponds, fish ponds, drip irrigation systems and sprinklers would be established.

Each of the farm ponds and fish ponds having a length of 30 m, height of 30 metre and depth of 1.5 m, will be set up at a cost of Rs 40,000.

“Of this amount, 90 per cent will be given as subsidy by the department, while the beneficiary farmers have to bear the remaining cost,” he said.

The farm ponds will be of immense benefit to the farmers as they provide dependable water resources to supplement irrigation to the standing crops at a critical growth stage by conserving the run-off water.

The farm ponds will also reduce the water logging in rough terrain areas.

Mr. Mohanasundar said that farmers who wished to avail the subsidy under the scheme should contact either the office of Assistant Executive Engineer at Kovilpatti or Executive Engineer here(Tel No:0461-2340687 & 9443544094).
