Tuticorin: A three-day multi-media training for ‘Friends of Police’ organised by the district police administration commenced here on Friday.
Resource persons, P.T. Uma Maheswari and S. Usha Rani, both project co-ordinators at Friends of Police Multi-media training centre, Chennai, explained to a gathering of Friends of Police (FoP) personnel, students and police officers, the benefits of FoP concept, which was introduced in Ramanathapuram during the 1990s.
Ms. Maheswari elucidated the procedures that needed to be followed by the FoPs while maintaining beat books and duty cards.
According to her, the FoP concept would be helpful to guide the youth to lead a decent living especially at a time when the percentage of first time criminal offence by people aged between 10 and 19 years was on a rise in the State during recent times.
The FoPs could play a vital role in the collection of intelligence from unconventional sources, which would be of immense help to the police. Speaking to The Hindu, Superintendent of Police Deepak Damor, said that the FoP concept provided an opportunity for the common man to make contribution in crime prevention.
Besides, the perception of public about police would improve through this mode of community policing.
In all, 20 police officers, 16 FoPs and 17 students were taking part in the training.
