TIRUPUR: The Centre of Indian Trade Union, ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s Labour Progressive Front and Marumalarchi Labour Front (MLF) have asked garment factories to extend bonus to their workers without terminating their service after disbursal of bonus.
CITU Hosiery and General Workers Union General Secretary M. Chandran said workers have been affected owing to the employers’ practice of terminating the workers every year. Continuation of service is a must to enjoy statutory rights and benefits like annual increment for any worker.
Cautioning the workforce to be vigilant while receiving bonus, the CITU leader said they would organise a series of awareness meetings across the town.
CITU would take out a rally on Wednesday (October 17) here demanding early disbursal of bonus.
Mr. Chandran had written a letter to Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA) urging it to give bonus to the workers 15 days before Deepavali.
CITU has also demanded that the factory managements not deny bonus to workers who have been engaged through contractors. “The factories should disburse bonus through contractors. Workers, especially tailors, who are working under contract arrangements are fully entitled to get bonus,” he added.
MLF leader S. Muthukumarasamy asked the managements to pay bonus before October 20. He wanted that bonus should be calculated on the basis of a tripartite wage agreement between employer associations, unions and the Government.
MLF asked the Government to make proper arrangements to run more buses to various destinations during Deepavali as lakhs of workers would travel to their native places.
The executive committee of the South India Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association (SIHMA) which met under the chairmanship of its president Mohan P. Kandasamy has asked its members to issue bonus well in advance.
The committee passed a resolution asking its members to decide the quantum of bonus at the factory level based on their financial position in view of the unhealthy competition and increase in raw material costs in the production of garments to the domestic market.
In separate letters to bankers, SIHMA appealed to them to sanction ad hoc limits or overdrafts to their clients.
