TIRUPUR: Tirupur Municipality on Friday launched a massive scheme to modernise slums at an outlay of Rs. 21 crore under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme.

Municipal Chairman K. Selvaraj issued orders to construct 156 houses and renovate 503 shelters in seven slums at Susaiyapuram east and west, Kumarappapuram, Chinna Nagar, Anaimedu, Military Colony and MGR Nagar, here.

Under the scheme, the Union and State Governments will provide a grant of Rs. 72,000 to construct a new house and the beneficiary will have to shell out Rs. 8,000.

To upgrade shelters, Rs. 40,000 will be given as grant. The beneficiary has to contribute Rs. 4,000.

Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan said that the beneficiaries can choose one suitable model among the five types provided by the local body.

Every shelter will have a plinth area of 270 sq ft with two rooms and a toilet. Payment will be made in four instalments based on the progress of the work.

Once the construction of houses are over and basic amneties provided, the localities would no more be described as slums. Hygienic and sanitary condition will be improved through the programme, he added.

A total of 1,582 shelters will be upgraded and 478 houses will be constructed.

Mr. Ashokan said that the local body would receive first instalment of the grant in a week.

The programme envisages free supply of drinking water connection and underground drainage connection to all these shelters.

Basic amenities will be provided at all the 27 slums in a year.
