This Day That Age
India told the United Nations on October 11 there could be no doubt that she had generated sufficient internal resources to be able to complete “the essential core” of her Second Five-year Plan. But if external resources did not become available in time, targets might not be completed within five years or might have to be revised, the Indian delegate Mr. J.N. Sahni told the General Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee in New York. Mr. Sahni said, “We would be blinding ourselves to realties of the situation, if we did not assert with the greatest emphasis, that time is of essence, so far as developing a balanced and harmonised world economy is concerned.” Referring to the report of the Economic and Social Council, which the Committee is debating, Mr. Sahni said a study of the world economic situation inevitably emphasised that so long as a race for armaments continued and human effort, along with the world’s material resources, continued to be “diverted to the forging of weapons for human destruction, the pace of economic development is bound to be retarded.”
