Corrections and clarifications

  • The sixth paragraph of an article “Waiting for Benazir Bhutto” (Op-Ed, October 12, 2007) was: “Writing in The Nation, Hussain Haqqani said the cases against Ms. Bhutto had been hanging over her head for years without investigators unable to find the evidence to secure even a single conviction.” It should have been “ … without investigators being able to find the evidence to secure even a single conviction.”

  • The first paragraph of a report “The saga of the argumentative Briton” (“Newscape” page, October 12, 2007) was: “It is perhaps not widely known that Doris Lessing, who has won the Nobel Prize for chronicling the female experience and the despairs of militant men-hating feminists, has often stood up for men.” It was an editing error. It should have been: “It is perhaps not widely known that Doris Lessing, winner of this year’s Nobel Prize for literature for chronicling the female experience, despairs of militant men-hating feminists and has, often, stood up for men.” (Doris Lessing never wrote about the “despairs of militant men-hating feminists”. What was meant was that she despairs of them.)

  • In “Question Corner” (“Science & Technology/Agriculture” page, October 11, 2007), the words “tetrapod” and “tetapod” occurred, leading to confusion. (The question was on frogs — “Why are frogs not seen in seas?”) The word is tetrapod, which means “a four- footed animal”; specifically in zoology, it denotes a member of the group Tetrapoda, which includes all vertebrates higher than fishes, i.e. amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

  • The name of the former Gujarat Minister of State for Home is Gordhan Jhadafiya, as mentioned in a report “Phone call records not available, Nanavati told”, and not Gordhan Zadaphia, as mentioned in a report “BJP dissidents hold strategy session”. Both stories appeared on October 12, 2007.
