COLOMBO: The Sri Lanka military on Friday claimed that at least 11 cadres of the LTTE and a soldier were killed in clashes across the northern region. The fighting raged on even as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, travelled to Jaffna town for a first hand assessment of the human rights situation. According to the Defence Ministry, six members of the LTTE and a soldier died in the Wanni region while four more cadres of the Tamil Tigers were killed in the Jaffna peninsula on Thursday. In a separate incident, the military claimed that one cadre of the LTTE was killed in a separate attack by the navy. Ms. Arbour, currently on a five-day visit, is winding up her tour on Saturday and is scheduled to hold a news conference to share her experiences. A section of the civil society and the political parties in Sri Lanka have urged the U.N. to set up a special mission to monitor the human rights situation in the island nation.
