Qualifiers spotted


Sohail Jairaj and Deepak turned in an impressive performance

Balaji won the junior snooker title


BANGALORE: The four qualifiers making the main round of the senior State-ranking snooker championship were identified.

At the KSBA hall here on Friday, Sohail Jairaj and Deepak turned in an impressive performance to put it across Satish and C. Ravindranath respectively to make the grade, along with Michael Rebello and Balaji Reddy. The championship resumes on Monday.

Meanwhile Balaji won the junior snooker title with an all-win record in the semifinal league.

Amit Bhushan finished second best while Mohd. Ali and Manju Kiran finished behind Amit in that order.

The results: Senior snooker (qualifying round): Deepak bt C. Ravindranath 3-58, 52-12, 56-3, 58-45, 65-26; Michael Rebello bt Rehman 65-48, 75-44, 34-62, 52-19, 37-55, 69-47; Balaji Reddy bt Kushal Agarwal 58-26, 61-63, 51-32, 81-14, 2-73, 91-20; Sohail Jairaj bt Satish 69-52, 77-29, 63-21, 54-35.

Megha upsets Sweety

BANGALORE: Megha Gupta of Gujarat upset Statemate and top seed Sweety Patel in the girls’ section in the opening round of the National under-9 chess tournament here on Friday. The match lasted over 150 minutes.

In the boys’ section, the top-seeded Mahapatra Sidhant of Orissa was extended to 70 moves by Mayank Jain of Karnataka.
