NATIONAL CONVENTION: Chairman, Indian Oil Corporation and national president, Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering, Sarthak Behuria (right) at the 49th National Convention of the IIIE in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. — THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Global economic integration has helped Indian industry become more vibrant and competitive than before, according to the president of the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering (IIIE) and Chairman of Indian Oil Group of Companies Sarthak Behuria. Inaugurating the 49th annual convention of IIIE here on Friday, he said Kerala was perhaps the most affected State in the country by the ongoing global economic integration, because of the share of cash crops in the gross domestic product of the State. However, with a clear vision on the goal attainable through the emerging opportunities, the State can turn the situation to its advantage. Referring to the Indian industrial scene, he said the sector should have to always look out for changes in the way it conducted business. Then only can the industry sustain its competitive advantage in a world of intensified competition, high customer expectations and unexpected market shifts. Founder-Director of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, N.S. Ramaswamy, who was one of the invited speakers at the convention, said technology was now beginning to control the fate of the world and its existence. Technocrats and the managers at all levels, including the politicians who decided how technology was put to use, should therefore be given the right kind of orientation in ethical and moral values. In this context, he stressed the need for including in the curriculum of all courses such subjects as philosophy, spirituality, religion, ethics, morals, values, art and literature. Nearly 150 delegates from all over the country are participating in the convention that will end on Saturday. Nearly 50 technical papers on the theme ‘Technology, Globalisation and Competitiveness: The Key Drivers of Growth’ are being presented at the convention. National President Elect of IIIE K.K. Padmanabhan offered felicitations. G. Krishnamurthy, National Chairman of the institution welcomed the gathering and K. Gopalakrishnan Nair from the Thiruvananthapuram Chapter of the institution proposed a vote of thanks. The institution gave its national awards for 2006-07 to Prem Vrat, Vice-Chancellor of Uttar Pradesh Technical University (Honorary Membership); K. Selvaraju, Secretary General, Southern India Mills Association (Lillian Gilberth Award); T.A. Krishnamoorthy, Managing Director, Kerala State Industries Development Corporation (Ramaswamy Cup); K.
